The legendary Ghazal singer, born in Amritsar (Punjab) in 1939. His father Natha Singh (Punjabi Sikh) was a trained vocalist and music professor in Khalsa College (Amritsar). Bhupinder started his musical career under the guidance of his father, Prof. Natha Singh. Trained in Patiala gharana, Bhupinder’s voice had an ethereal quality. Bhupinder performed on All India Radio, Delhi. He was also attached to the Delhi Doordarshan Center, Delhi. He learnt guitar and violin.
Musical Instruments were the only toys with which Bhupinder played since childhood. The sounds of sitar, sarangi, saranda, mendolian, tabla, harmonium, tanpura, rabab and guitar were irresistible. Later in life, he mastered these instruments to such a high level that his solo album playing solo melodies on guitar and rabab was released by the music company. Bhupinder Singh’s rare musical talents gave birth to a new genre of music direction where he set to tune many a meaningful geets and ghazals of the masters of the urdu poetry.
As a singer and music director, he broke away from the traditional style of ghazal singing in which the sarangi and tabla are used and introduced the sarod, the Spanish guitar, bass, drum sets, etc. He was the first one to use guitar, and western instruments in ghazals along with the Indian instruments. This gifted singer and composer, who is an ardent fan of Mh. Rafi is not only respected and loved in the music and film industry but has a special place in the heart of every music connoisseur.
In 1964, music director Madan Mohan heard him in Delhi at a function and immediately called him to Bombay. He gave him a chance to sing the song “ Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga” in Chetan Anand‘s Haqeeqat. .There was no looking back for Bhupinder. His famous songs are “ Hoke Majboor” , “ Dil Dhoondta Hai ”, “ Kabhi Kisiko Muqammil Jahan Nahi Milta ”, the quintessential musical journey still continues.

Most music lovers know Bhupinder the singer. But few know that he is also a guitarist (the introducer of twelve string guitar in the industry ) who has given background score for Hindi films. He played several musical instruments like Rabab , Ud for music directors like Madan mohan . According to veteran music director Naushad, when it comes to the guitar, no one can match up to Bhupinder. For a man who brought orchestration and instrumentation into Hindi film music along with his one time mentor R.D.Burman this transition from film songs to classical based ghazals has indeed been a giant step. But, he says, even when he was singing he never compromised with the basic Indian-ness of the songs.
Besides film songs he recorded non film albums like ghazals and bhajans. His non film albums were :
